24! Questions for the Concrete Present

Exhibition Catalogue

For all its precision, the exact moment when the term Concrete Art was first coined remains uncertain. With his manifesto of the same name, Theo van Doesburg formally introduced the term into art theory in 1930. However, he is believed to have used it as early as 1924 to describe his own work.

One hundred years later, this anniversary — despite the remaining uncertainties — provides a fitting opportunity to ask a younger generation of artists, whose work is stylistically close to this movement, about their relationship to Concrete Art. What influence have its origins had on their own artistic practice? Are its principles still relevant today? And does the same apply to its name?

Their responses form a central element of this publication, alongside a concise historical overview of the beginnings of Concrete Art.

Susa Templin
Light, Space, and Time

Exhibition Catalogue

In 2021, Susa Templin brought her concept of photography into the space of the Museum of Concrete Art — quite literally. Through her Spatial Abstractions — “rooms made of images of rooms” — the artist creates installations that respond directly to the museum’s architecture.

The catalogue goes beyond a simple documentation of the installation, presenting works, exhibitions, and art-in-architecture projects from the past ten years. Essays by specialists in Concrete Art and photography accompany the different bodies of work. Dr. Theres Rohde, curator of the exhibition, explores the tension between abstraction and concretion in Templin’s practice, while Dr. Christina Leber, head of the DZ Bank Art Collection, identifies a photographic philosophy of space.

Through both text and images, the catalogue introduces the artist’s oeuvre and opens up a perspective on a contemporary photographic practice that extends far beyond conventional notions of photography.

Wolfram Ullrich

Exhibition Catalogue

Wolfram Ullrich (*1961) works at the intersection of painting and sculpture. For decades, he has captivated audiences with striking optical illusions achieved through refined techniques. His vividly coloured, often multi-part wall reliefs possess a remarkable sense of physical presence, appearing to project into the surrounding space. Their dynamic arrangements transform the perception of entire rooms.

In this publication, the MKK Ingolstadt presents Ullrich’s diverse yet coherent body of work for the first time in a comprehensive overview, highlighting connections across different periods of his career.

Painted Diagrams
Bauhaus, Art and Infographics

Exhibition Catalogue

What is the relationship between infographics and art? This compelling question lies at the heart of the exhibition Painted Diagrams. Beginning with the Bauhaus, the presentation traced a line to contemporary art, featuring around 30 positions that demonstrate the ironic, subversive, and also affirmative use of diagrams in artistic practice. Conversely, it also examined the range of artistic design strategies that graphic designers employ as a matter of course.

From both perspectives, one thing becomes clear: the focus is always on processes of knowledge shaped by aesthetic means—processes that, at their worst, can be manipulative, and at their best, can generate insight.

On the Spiritual in Art
100 Years After Kandinsky and Malevich

Published on the occasion of the exhibition

Two specialist museums with distinct focuses—Christian art and Concrete art—join forces to explore what “the spiritual” in art might mean one hundred years after the beginnings of the avant-garde. The project originated in an interest in two artists who fundamentally expanded, transformed, and revolutionised the understanding of art: Wassily Kandinsky and Kazimir Malevich. Drawing on a wide range of fields—including science, cosmology, art history, and religion—they developed their own mythologies and artistic theories.

Carlos Cruz-Diez
Color in Motion

Exhibition Catalogue

Carlos Cruz-Diez (1923–2019) was a master of Op Art and is regarded as a key figure of the 20th century in the field of colour theory. True to his statement, “Art and life cannot be separated because they are one and the same thing,” the Venezuelan artist realised numerous works and installations in public spaces. In these, he explored the effects of colour through movement, light, and optical perception.

Carlos Cruz-Diez: Color in Motion was the title of the exhibition at the Museum of Concrete Art, where the artist presented a cross-section of his works and colour studies. The retrospective, specially created (light) installations, and a colour labyrinth came together to form a unique presentation of his work.

Office Art or the Office in the Museum

Exhibition Catalogue

The catalogue follows the thematic chapters of the exhibition, such as “Full- and Part-Time Workers” and “Office Vegetation.” In addition to the two editors, renowned experts were invited to contribute, including Dr Christoph Bartmann, then Director of the Goethe-Institut in Warsaw, and Prof. Dr Matthias Bleyl, who was teaching at weißensee academy of art berlin at the time. Bartmann examines the relationship between bureaucracy and creativity in the modern office, while Bleyl analyses prominent desks, such as that of President Trump. Sarah Dorkenwald also offers a perspective on the future of work.

Logo: The Art of the Symbol

Exhibition Catalogue

The connection between logos and the signalling painting of Concrete Art is closer than it might first appear. Many Concrete artists created symbols for major companies, while designers often draw on the same methods used in Concrete Art: using basic forms, bold colours, and striving for formal reduction.

The Museum of Concrete Art explored this relationship for the first time in the exhibition Logo: The Art of the Sign. The catalogue brings together art, graphic design, and branding in a way never seen before. Editors Theres Rohde and Simone Schimpf, together with their team of authors, not only trace a shared history of design from the early 20th century through texts on trademarks and designers, but also show, through thematic essays, interviews, and compelling images, how closely logos and art are intertwined.

Surfaces
Adolf Fleischmann – A Pioneer Between Art and Medicine

Exhibition Catalogue

For the first time, the Museum of Concrete Art and the German Museum of Medical History in Ingolstadt staged a joint exhibition dedicated to Adolf Fleischmann (1892–1968), a fascinating figure in 20th-century art. The exhibition traced Fleischmann’s life and, for the first time, brought together both sides of his work: his “calling” as an artist and his “profession” as a medical illustrator and moulage artist.

The presentation aimed to show the “whole” Fleischmann, highlighting an unusual biography of the 20th century. It consciously included an aspect often overlooked in artist biographies: how Fleischmann earned his living. This is particularly interesting because, as a source of income, he worked in the medical field in Zürich and later in New York, achieving remarkable results. Consequently, his body of work displays a pronounced duality: his medical illustrations are celebrated for their precise naturalistic representation, while his paintings are entirely non-representational, communicating solely through colour and form. The Surfaces serve as a connecting link between these two very different fields of activity.

Black on White
Highlights from the Maximilian and Agathe Weishaupt Collection and the Foundation for Concrete Art and Design

Exhibition Catalogue

Since 2009, the Munich collector couple Maximilian and Agathe Weishaupt have collaborated with the Museum of Concrete Art and the Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst und Design. During this time, they have acquired many important works of art that had never been publicly displayed. Particularly striking are the reduced works in black and white, including major pieces by François Morellet, Richard Serra, Günther Uecker, Roland Fischer, Günter Fruhtrunk, and Raimund Girke. Sculptures, paintings, works on paper, and photographs were presented in a varied exhibition. Combined with works from the Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst und Design, the museum offered a large overview exhibition demonstrating that black-and-white works are far from colourless. In total, around 80 works by more than 50 artists were shown.

Bend or Stand Firm?
The Art of Folding

Exhibition Catalogue

The exhibition Bend or Stand Firm?—The Art of Folding focused primarily on contemporary positions that explore folding in its many forms, engaging with fundamental questions of concrete-constructive art. Until now, no museum exhibition has presented such a comprehensive overview of recent developments on this theme. Over 40 international artists were represented at the Museum of Concrete Art with paintings, sculpture, video, and photography, revealing surprising, sensual, technical, and even humorous aspects of folding. For the exhibition, Katja Strunz created a large wall installation, and Terry Haggerty realized a new wall painting over twenty meters long.

The catalogue includes numerous artists’ statements on folding in art, as well as essays by Amely Deiss, Julia Galandi-Pascual, Kathrin Gut, Simone Schimpf, and Frédéric Schwilden.

Vera Molnár
(Dis)Order. (Dés)Ordre.

Published on the occasion of the exhibition

The Stiftung für Konkrete Kunst und Design Ingolstadt organized a major retrospective in honour of Hungarian artist Vera Molnár (1924–2023) on the occasion of her 90th birthday, held at the Museum of Concrete Art in Ingolstadt and the Museum Haus Konstruktiv in Zürich. Molnár lived and worked in Paris from 1947 onwards. As a pioneering figure in digital art, she began using mainframe computers as a central tool for creating her geometric-systematic works in the late 1960s and continued to work with computers throughout her career. She translated her hand drawings of basic forms, such as squares, into self-written programs that incorporated chance as a key design principle. This approach produced series in which strict regularity was varied through random disruptions.

Neon
On the Radiance of Art

Published on the occasion of the exhibition

Neon colours attract attention, awaken, warn, highlight, and have become ubiquitous in everyday life, advertising, fashion, media, and traffic. Since the late 1950s, artists have also been experimenting with the effects of fluorescent colours and neon-coloured Plexiglas in visual art.

Neon – Vom Leuchten der Kunst focuses for the first time on the use of neon colours in art, presenting selected paintings, sculptures, installations, and photographs to explore why artists employ this striking colour as a fundamental element in their work.

Timm Ulrichs
Image Finder, Image Inventor

Published on the occasion of the exhibition

The work of Timm Ulrichs spans an impressive range of performative and multimedia works, from sculptures and projects involving animals and plants to language-based works and installations. His tautologies and double entendres in image and text are full of wit and subtle humour.

Building on the cross-disciplinary approach of earlier avant-gardes, he describes himself as a “total artist” and the “first living artwork.” This elaborately designed book provides a comprehensive overview of Timm Ulrichs’ entire oeuvre since the 1950s, featuring numerous previously unpublished works and offering new, in-depth insights into his fascinating artistic universe.

The Idea of the Concrete.
Concrete Art as a Development in the History of Ideas

Anniversary Catalogue

Concrete Art is a historical phenomenon that, building on Constructivism, shaped non-representational art up to the 1960s.

Concrete Art also refers to an artistic attitude whose fundamental questions and self-reflections remain relevant today: What is art? What makes a work a work of art? What is the role of the artist? These core questions, which define the essence of Concrete Art—the “Idea of the Concrete”—form the basis of many artistic developments in the 20th century and retained their relevance even when the term “Concrete Art” played a lesser role in the 1970s. This book is dedicated to the Idea of the Concrete.

Fifteen essays describe Concrete Art as an intellectual-historical development that continues to the present day. Contrary to common assumptions, the Idea of the Concrete is not a dogmatic or purely formalist approach but a source of numerous new artistic strategies and positions. The second part of the book presents the museum’s diverse and high-quality collection, featuring a selection of the most significant works by 150 artists on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the Museum of Concrete Art.
