Dieter Hacker

Dieter Hacker is a German object artist and painter. 

His work is characterized by a striking evolution from analytical, kinetic art to politically engaged art and finally to painting. Initially, he created concrete and kinetic works that were deliberately designed to be participatory, such as Play objects or Edible Pictures. With his political works, and particularly since 1971 with his concept of an artist-run producer’s gallery, Hacker made a radical break from the art market. The exhibitions he designed and curated himself addressed, e.g. the social relevance of art, the role of photography in everyday life, the art market, and the utopias of Constructivism. Beginning in the 1980s, he turned to expressive and figurative painting within the context of the Young Wild Ones. He addressed both personal and political themes in his painting.
